Introduction: 1. This book is a companion to textbook Modern Chinese - Chinese for Beginners to train beginners of Chinese in listening comprehension. It consistes of two parts: Part I is exercises which include the written work to be done by the learner while listening but not the oral work. Part II is the Tapescript which can be used as an instructure's guide and, in part, as the key to exercises.

2. Each lesson is composed of the following sections: pronunciation drills, intonation drills, word stress drills, sentence stress drills, multiple choice exercises and question and answer exercises. Some items are comparatively difficult and are left to the instructor to choose whatever he or she thinks suitable for his/her students.

3. The dictation in the exercises aims at training the learner to discriminate confusing sounds and tones and in the later part, at getting the learner competent in taking notes in class.

The volune I contains 30 lessons, and volume II contains 25 lessons.

To use this book, you need to get the accompanying cassette tapes.
